Something New – Emily’s blog!

There is a limit to the detail I can put on my social media posts. Some might say that’s for the best, but I felt the need to flesh things out a bit – so here we are!

As many of you will know, I spend my weeks working in the Houses of Parliament for a Conservative MP. I have been there just over a year now and it is safe to say that things rarely stand still! Since I started, we have had the EU referendum, David Cameron stepping down, Theresa May taking over, and now a General Election. My day to day life will change considerably as I am employed to help with parliamentary duties only. From 3 May, my boss will technically no longer be an MP and I will be denied access to the estate. Any canvassing will have to be in my spare time. It’s going to be a complicated process to say the least, but I think I’m looking forward to it!

In the meantime, Fay Thomas’ lovely Freya FST has been a bit of a wonder horse. She might only be seven years old but she’s showing tons of ability for the higher levels and is turning into a bit of a competition pro. I was really pleased with her performance at the NAF Five Star Winter Championships. She seemed to relish the atmosphere, and even improved on her Regionals placing, coming sixth in a very strong Medium Gold Championship. I must confess that I was bit nervous, which is very unlike me. It has been quite a while since I last rode in a Championship, and I felt a bit sick before getting on. Luckily, my routine kicked in and I managed to calm myself down and ride a decent test. I was very grateful to every sport psychologist I have ever spoken to!!

I am really looking forward to the season ahead. By my calculations (and I could be very wrong!) Freya has already qualified for the Medium Gold Summer Regionals, so we can really crack on and focus on establishing her at Advanced Medium. I might even get out the top hat and tails again in the not too distant future… We have been concentrating on the Medium work to prepare for the Winters, so it will be interesting to see what the flying changes are like when we come back to them. Quite often I find that a little break can improve things, so fingers crossed!

Lots of people ask me how I manage my double life. The simple answer is that I have my brilliant parents to keep things ticking over. Dad rides Freya during the week, while Mum takes care of her management. All I have to do is keep myself in good shape and manage my time as best I can. It’s really useful to have a gym at work, so I find myself there most days, and I also commute by bike. I really focus on staying strong in my core and my back, which is my weakest area. That way, I can just hop on Freya on a Friday night and off we go! I very rarely spend a weekend in London, but it makes it feel like a bit of a holiday when I do. It might sound a bit strange, but it’s almost like having a mini break in the city I live in!

So there we go, a little taster of life in London/Dorset. I’m hoping to cover a whole range of topics, and have a long list of potential ramblings. Let me know if there is anything you would like me to cover and I will do my best!
